thanks for all the work you’re doing on this show! i just wanted to note that “laplander” is considered a slur by most saami people today and it’d probably be better if the term had been avoided, seeing as the show also makes the distinction of using サーミ人.
That’s interesting since, from my minute and a half of research, it looks like they’re called Laplanders just because they’re native to the Lapland region of Finland. Kind of a weird thing to take offense to, seeing as how, in the US, they prefer to be called Native Americans rather than Indians, since Indians is an inaccurate, antiquated term. Although, supposedly, more and more are becoming particular about being identified as the specific tribe they’ve descended from. But, then again, my impression of the situation in the US is that the whole thing stems from non-natives being offended on their behalf, which may or may not be the situation in Finland, though I can’t say for sure since I’m not too familiar with the goings-ons of Finland.

my objection wasn’t about laplanders relating to inhabitants of finnish lapland, since that would include ethnic finns as well, but calling a member of the minority sami people by their preferred name rather than an imposed exonym. the original japanese script clearly uses “sami” as well, and the character in question is wearing traditional sami attire, like the four winds hat. i think nations, especially minority ones which were discriminated against in the past, should at least be given the respect of calling them by their own damn name, and i don’t think it’s a bad thing that more people pay attention to these issues.
