Easily the most beautiful anime of the season

We’re back, and welcome to Autumn of 2017. As you saw below, our pick for the season is Children of the Whales. Once again Netflix has blessed us with the opportunity to save anime—I only wish they would do the same for the other two dozen series airing right now. But that aside, there are a few little notes that would be helpful to understand this show which I’ll explain below.

Their abilities, thymia, are written in kanji as 情念動, which literally means “emotion telekinesis”. Although explained by the characters, it’s self-evident in Japanese. Also from the official glossary at this link, the shapes above their heads and around what they control is called their aura.

Apathoia, as well as the writing and spelling of Lykos’s name, appear to have Greek origins. Apathoia of course coming from the word apathy, or a-pathos.

Most of the characters are named after historic and outdated names for Japanese colors. A list can be found here.

Moreover, this allows us to understand the title of the ED, Hashitairo. An explanation can be found here, but more important is justification for the more or less made up color we used, half-cold purple. Cold purple comes from a color chart I found here, and the “half” part is expounded upon in the first link. Put simply, the name in Japanese literally means halfway between deep and light purple. It has a very interesting explanation about dyes, royalty, and so on, but I hope that gives you an idea of where this strange name came from. Different cultures have vastly different names for colors that change throughout the ages, so it shouldn’t be surprising how difficult it can be to approximate.

Leave your mark on the world

Wow, the ride is finally over. There’s a lot to say, but I’ll leave it to each of us.

I would like to thank the entire staff that worked on this and helped realize this huge project, it’s been truly an amazing ride and we hope you enjoyed the show as much as the Asenshi crew did.

I’d like to also extend my thanks to the entire staff over at TRIGGER and Yoh Yoshinari himself for making this great show in the first place and all of our fans for supporting us.
And don’t forget, no matter what happens, a believing heart is your magic.

Also please make sure to (re)watch it on Netflix once it releases there to support TRIGGER! (Buying merch also helps!)

Akatsukin:

To be honest, I really didn’t care for LWA when it first came out. Sure it looked good, but it was as generic as could be, and had no real substance. The second OVA was fine too, but it was this TV series that stirred my subber soul. It had real content, there was a lot that was well thought out (and some that wasn’t), and I felt a lot more connected with all of the characters. Every week was a flurry of excitement to get the subs out, and it was my pleasure to provide them to everyone. Though it waxed and waned, I feel that overall Little Witch Academia was a good series with a very satisfying conclusion. From here on out, I’ll continue walking my own path with magic flowing from my believing heart.

Ianu:

Little Witch Academia was a mostly pleasant and sometimes magical show, and as such it’s probably a good one to go out on. After a couple of eventful years and more episodes than I would like to count, I’m retiring from fansubbing; this mediocre editor has run his course, and then some. There will be some things I’ll miss and some I don’t, and some regrets will linger, but I think I was happy all in all. Thanks for watching our shows!

What words between them yet remain?

Two important things to announce: 1) The original release tonight will be a v0 only because of the encode. We’re releasing with BS11 now, and the Netflix rip later. Don’t wait for it. Nevermind, v1 up now with a proper encode. 2) We updated the progress sidebar, so you don’t need to refresh the page to see the live status. It updates automatically.

Gokigenyou, Japan

Am I the only one noticing the whole Venus thing going on here? And they’re both perfect, best in their class, slightly haughty but justified by hard-earned skill… Basically I’m calling Diana an idol. Also, according to Ianu’s research, a Venusian eclipse happens in alternating cycles of 8 and 120 years. I wonder how much Trigger did their research on that one.

Literally my face on Mother’s Day morning

When Akko and Diana convince you to drop everything and be with your mother, you know you’ve made a good anime. Also, at least some of us here apparently would enjoy having hot bitchy twin cousins. I’ll let you decide whether you think that’s a good thing or not.

I’m so fucked up…

I was going to be really fancy with the terms this episode since we presumably go to Finland, but I got overwritten. Just know that the harvest festival is called Kekri, and the evil-warding ceremony a.k.a. Walpurgis Night is Vappu.

Oh yeah, and this episode had 11 people “in charge” of the animation this episode. Not keyframers, but ADs and such.

I came here to laugh at you

This episode was too real and/or Orwellian for me. Plus, the bully bullying is neverending. But fair warning; if you’re the kind of loser who didn’t like the dragon episode, just stop watching now. It’s only going to get more painful for you and your proletariat brain.

Pick two as your roommates

Couple of notes this episode. The Samhain Festival is actually called the Magic Festival in Japanese, but it’s written Samhain everywhere in English. It really has little to do with magic and more to do with the origins of Halloween, so I have no idea what Trigger is thinking.

As for the Grand Triskelion revealed last episode, we have more information now. In Japanese, the kanji given for it are 究極魔法, meaning ultimate magic. That should give us a bit more to work off of if they didn’t already say it in the Witchpedia.
